I have a 1986 f250 with a 6.9 diesel. However, I have had plans since I got it to put in a 7.3 or a 5.9. Well, a few days ago I fell into a 2002 7.3 with 77000 miles for about 600 bucks. So, the powerstroke will be going in as a winter project. Anyhow, I wanted to know if anyone could point me in the direction of someone elses swap or give any pointers. Also, is there anything in particular I should go over in particular with this engine when I get it into the garage?
How long has the motor been sitting unused and what are your plans for it in terms of power? You're going to be a master at wiring harnesses pretty soon. Make sure you take pictures of your build and link us to the thread. We'd love to see it.
We'll also be here to help you with any questions and to get it up and running. As mentioned, you'll need wiring harnesses (including the OBDII plug in the cab, fuse panel, etc) , PCM, IDM, then decide if you want to mess with GEM/VSM, ABS module, etc.
The engine has not yet been pulled. It has been sitting for about 2 months now. It is currently in a bus, so I do not know what may or may not be different about it harness wise, though I will be pulling every harness in it. I would assume that if I run into some serious trouble wiring it in, I could get a company like Painless Performance to assist. I will be calling them when I get a chance to see if they cover anything like this.
The build should be fairly simple, and I'm looking at about 400 - 450 horses. My big concern for the time being however is to figure out just how to get this thing to work in my old truck.
Without opening too big a can of worms, the 02 motor comes with PMR's (powdered metal rods) instead of forged rods. Depending on tuning and a whole list of other things, 400 hp is considered the safe limit by many for PMR's. If you're considering going North of 400, you might want to consider a minor rebuild.
A bus motor is going to have lot's of idle time and hard miles anyway, so a little rebuild might not be such a bad thing. Since the bus will be an International motor instead of Ford, you'll want to start searching your local junkyards for wiring, PCM, IDM, etc from a Ford truck in the 94 - 03 range. You're not going to find a tuner for a school bus, so you'll need Ford parts. Decide on who's tunes you want to run to reach your HP goal and discuss with them if they'd rather use a 94-97 set up or a 99 - 03 set up. You'll need custom tuning either way, so you might as well keep your options open.
