97 EXPEDITION - Started truck and get a flicker on BRAKE light and ABS light after engine starts... All seems normal but notice my headlights are on very dim but headlight switch is OFF. If you turn on headlights engine immediately fails... Any ideas what is wrong ? Headlights continue to stay on after engine quits... Battery voltage normal 12.65... Must be a blown fuse or bad relay somewhere ????
I am not positive, but I think that you have either a faulty headlight switch or a faulty ignition switch. The headlight switch stays "HOT' constantly, even with the key off. That is how you run your battery down by leaving your lights on after stopping the vehicle. The ignition switch also stays "HOT" constantly. My uneducated guess would be the ignition switch as this switch is the only assembly that could affect the dash warning lights and the headlights. If you notice, your warning lights should come on when turning the key switch to the "on" position, then go out when starting the vehicle. If the ignition switch is bad, the warning lights may still be getting currentthrought the ignition switch, after starting the vehicle. If all else fails, let Ford Service fix it, it is cheaper than spending several hundred dollars changing parts.

I'm still in the dark as to what was wrong.... It was going back to the dealer I bought it from and it sit for a day. I went to start it up to take it to the dealer and the same had the same prob of all warning lights first coming on and after it started the BRAKE and ABS lights were still on going into their flashing off and on mode. But they flicker off sometimes in the off and on mode... I also still had the headlights on real dim with headlight switch off. I then switched the headlights on expecting the motor to die like before but this time the BRAKE and ABS warning lights went out and motor stayed running... Its been normal every since. I ordered the shop manual ($195) and will at least have something to look at the next time it fails... Thanks for the info about the headlight and iginition switch. I really think it is a relay not making good contact. The BRAKE and ABS are the last two warning lights to go out when you first start the truck. I hope all those relays are identical as I plan to get a spare to start swaping around when the prob comes back...
