k guys my truck is a 1980 f250 351 m np 435 4 speed 4 inch lift with a dana 60 kingpin up front my motor is starting to smoke and laking the power i want to know what it take to put aq 460 in ive heard it will bolt to the np 435 trans and maybe motor mounts where can i get them and it will be a 460 for a 79 f250
This engine came in this body style truck, only later than yours. So all you would need is the motor mounts from I think a 83-up truck with a 460.
I have also read that the oil filter won't fit because the 460 trucks had a special crossmember to clear it, but a remote oil filter kit fixes this.
And if the engine you get doesn't have a rear sump oil pan, you will need to get one of those and the extended pickup tube also.
You will need to do some research on the bellhousing and the clutch. The bellhousing pattern is the same for the 351m/400 and 460, but I think I remember the 351m/400 may have had a smaller clutch than some of the 460s, so it might rub on the smaller bellhousing. You will have to double check this, I am not sure about it.
The engine perches on the crossmember will need to be changed. (it is a smallblock block w/ a different flange on the back)
or L&L sells conversion mounts.
The bell housing PATTERN is the same but there's no room for the 460 clutch/flywheel inside the 351M/400 bell.
You'll need to use a 1/2" spacer or a flywheel from a 390.
1979 was the transition year from internal to external balance 460. You need to be sure which engine you have as the 390 flywheel is neutral balance.
Look behind your harmonic balancer to see if the crankshaft has a smooth spacer or a 'hatchet' counter weight.
This post from NumberDummy spells it out: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...5&postcount=12
I have read that some people have issues with the depth of the pilot bushing.
Search for "351M bellhousing" you will find 18 pages of threads.
im going to be using 460 from a 79 or older truck so i dont have to change oil pumps and pans now on to the bell housing can i use the 351 flywheel and clutch or get a new one to fit it is the swap easyer to do on a pre 79 truck vs the 80
The bellhousing is too short.
The transmission input shaft will bottom in the pilot of the 460 crank.
The M clutch/flywheel will not bolt to the 460 crank
The engine PERCHES on the engine crossmember need to be changed.
It doesn't make a difference what year truck you have, it makes a difference where in the 1979 model year your engine came from because they went from internal to external balance mid year.
Therefore you either find a 390 flywheel for internal balance, or pony up the huge cash for the L&L one if you have external balance.
There is NO 460 bellhousing for a mechanical clutch, it only came in front of automatics until Ford went hydraulic later in the '80's.
Like I said there are 18 pages of threads, you're not going to reinvent the wheel.
heres what ive been told if the 460 wasnt a automatic i can use the m flywheel and clutch but if its an automatic i have to use a 390 flywheel and order motor stools and im not going to put a c6 in the truckl 4 speed or nothing old men drive automatics thanks for all the info
Or don't listen to anyone in here, which is fine, we are just trying to save you the headache later on when you are trying to fit a square plug in a round hole....

ok ill lisen i checked out the mount at l&l only 136 plus shiping isnt bad and i can get a 390 flywheel will i need the 390 clutch to thanks for the help i want this to work out you dont see many 80 to 86 with old 460 in them and a dana 60 king pin up front 4 inch lift and soon to be 39.5 by 15 " r16 traxus sts
You need to drill the 390 flywheel for the 400 clutch you already have.
You don't need the L&L mounts if you change the frame horns for those from a 460 in your era truck.
Then you just use regular 460 mounts you can get at any autoparts.
