by the time he gets done fabricating a mount, putting the freightshaker switch in will be more work than just replacing the stock switch. and then you are gonna have this BIG ugly thing hanging off the side of the column

Tehe, bikini-tops and cut-off jeans on a good-looking girl, every guy's dream, right? But in my case there is no need for this, when in a bind I can always go and see the neighbors (like I did yesterday) - the guy is a big-rig mechanic and has his own trucks too, and for some reason his wife has pretty much addopted me as her daughter - why is that I have no idea, I would definitely never adopt a basketcase nutjob like myself, but hey, they are nice people and I like them, so it all works out in the end.

It is not that big, and not ugly either - I will have it painted matte black to match the steering column, I think it can be made to look nice. My main concern with factory-replacement switches is that unless I go to the dealership and buy an OEM switch ($$$) I do not know how long an aftermarket switch will last - the person at the parts store said they have small wires on them, just like those I saw on that repair cam-thing I was fighting on Sunday. My truck has towing setup from the factory so it needs big wires in the switch - I read on the other diesel site that someone had their factory-style replacement turn-signal switch catch on fire inside his column, I most certainly do not want that to happen to me... Besides the neighbor assured me this will be a plug-in installation, and if I do not like it we can always unplug it and I can buy a factory-style switch and he will put it in for me But the information you provided on the first page of this thread has not been in vain, as I will use it to remove the old switch and part of its harness while still retaining the cruise-control wires - unfortunately this means I may indeed have to fight those pins in the electrical connector, which is majorly annoying!
All this said, can anyone please tell me where in my truck I can find the flasher for the emergency 4-ways? It is not in the fuse panel, that one is for the normal turn-signals, with the 4-ways on I can hear something clicking on the passenger-side of the dash maybe but I have not been able to locate it

I don't know if its the same on yours, but I think on my 88 the 4-way flasher is on the backside of the fuse panel?? Like the same spot as the regular, but flip it over? Thats just off the top of my head so I might be wrong.
As far as small wires burning out because of towing, you can always put the signals on relays just like people do for headlights. They actually have nicely made modules that plug into the trailer wiring for just that purpose. I put one in my ranger after the stock flasher had issues with my trailer and it worked great, so I swapped it to my F250 when I bought it.
I don't know if its the same on yours, but I think on my 88 the 4-way flasher is on the backside of the fuse panel?? Like the same spot as the regular, but flip it over? Thats just off the top of my head so I might be wrong..
correct. the 4 way flasher is directly behind the blinker flasher on the back of the fuse panel. you need to be a contortionist or a itty bitty mini midget to get behind the dash to get to it.
Well I just got back from work, and OMG, it lives! Neighbor must have had nothing to do all evening to do it, or he just wants his truck back real badly, but either way he fixed it good - Freightliner switch is on the column and working great, and actually does not look out of place at all - not sure how he has it attached there, but there is no giant hose-clamp-like thing around it like some older tractor-trailers have them.

Mine is not there, there's nothing up there at all, even the holes where it would plug in if it were there are empty!

Well master Tom, I am definitely not a midget, so I guess that makes me a contortionist, for I was able to reach up there just fine while hanging upside down from the seat - however, no flasher there, just empty holes. Actually the only reason I'm asking about it is because my neighbor wanted to know this, but seeing how he has everything installed and working he must have found it somewhere - I will ask him tomorrow if he ever located it.
The 4-way flasher-thing in my truck was all the way in the right corner of the dash, he had to pull the glove box to get to it. Maybe part of the factory towing equipment? He says he also found a big relay in that area, hiding behind the plastic panel, any idea what that maybe for?
Hope that freightliner switch is a good one. 6 months ago I replaced my turn signal switch assembly with the OEM equivalent that I bought at O'reilly's. The damn plastic must be made in china, cuz 3 weeks ago, my right signal stoped cancelling automatically.

See, this is just what I was afraid of - if there was no other way I would have been forced to buy the genuine Ford as I cannot be asking my neighbor to fix the same problem over and over again, and I most definitely cannot afford any tickets. Thankfully, the Freightliner switch is very very heavy-duty, it has some very big sliding things inside it that make the switching happen, also springs that keep it from flopping around internally. It is a genuine switch from an old truck, US-made and all.

Sounds good. I'd like to see a pic. I don't want to replace it again, only to have it fail again. I broke my steering wheel puller last time I did it (damn cheapo harbor frieght tools).
