85 F150 4.9 Needs Help

Got this truck from my brother. It sat for 2-3 years then he drove it to my house and it then sat for a couple more months. I went out to move it and it started right away the first try. I let it warm up then tried to move it. It ended up stalling as I was trying to ease it out of the small ruts it had already sank into. Couldn't get it to start again. Then things started going wrong.

1st} It wouldn't crank as good if at all. So I took the battery and starter to work. Charged the battery, tested it, then also tested the starter. Battery came back good but starter was shot. It was actually shooting sparks on the test bench. So I got a new starter and solenoid to replace them.

2nd} After installing the new starter and solenoid. The solenoid quit working after about a minute. No biggy, I put the old one back in and cranks over fine. Still cranks with no start.

3rd} Started leaking fuel from carb and EGR. So I crossed the numbers and hunted down a carb kit and rebuilt it. Decided to convert to a clear fuel filter in the process so I'm able to see inside the filter for trouble shooting purposes. Also picked up a new EGR but I'm going to wait to install it after I get it started again. Cranks, seems to be getting fuel, but still no start.

Stumped.... so I checked for spark and I do have spark. Also added some fresh fuel in case it was empty but still no start and seems to get fuel.

So this is where I'm at now. Posting in here for ideas because it sure beats me how it started and ran for like 10 minutes then nothing after stalling it. I only heard it fire twice during this whole feasco so far and they were just barely. A little poof and then gone.

I ordered a fuel pump and separator. I'm working in the direction of the tank at the moment. Planning to drain/flush the tank and blow out the lines, replace the pump and separator, and put in a couple gallons of fresh fuel. I'm doing this because the truck doesn't seem to have had a gas cap on in a while and I'm going to make sure it's not something because of that. My mind keeps thinking water but who knows. The lines could be clogged and I don't have enough fuel at the carb.

I'll post updates as I try stuff and if I find anything new.

Any and all help is much appreciated, and and thank you in Advance.

If it was flooding, it could have ruined the spark plugs. Sometimes, spark plugs never recover from a fuel bath.

Thanks for the quick reply. I didn't think of that, but you're right. Something as simple as the plugs fouling could cause a no start. I'll give some new ones a try seeing they are cheap enough.

Update

Ok, I'm charging the battery as I post this. I don't have my pump and separator yet but most likely tomorrow I will.

Got some new plugs like Rogue_Wulff suggested. I put those in and inspected the old plugs and wire boots as I changed them. Wires seem to be in decent shape. The old plugs on the other hand had carbon build up (which isn't uncommon) but I noticed the scent of fuel on the plugs was there but weak (according to what I remember fuel exposed plugs smelling like). Not that it really means anything on its own.

I also noticed that the fuel in the clear filter was a strange amber color. Water and rust? If that is the case then it should be safe to assume I will need to drop the tank at some point. So I decided to just punch a hole in the bottom to let it drain. If I can get it to start then the tank will get dealt with properly.

Let ya know what happens.

Drained Fuel

Wow! I just got the fuel drained and it sure looks bad. I noticed that the last bucket of fuel smelt like gas and actually foamed while pouring it into a can. Besides that, it's the color of beer.

After pouring each bucket and noticing that the gas smell got stronger with each bucket and it would foam more as well. I think my theory of water in the tank was correct.

Now that I have that taken care of, all I need to do is put in the new pump and separator when they come in. Also a couple gallons of fresh fuel and some fuel drier should help.

Guess I'll see what happens when I try to start it in the next two days. Hope it fixes the problem, but even if it didn't I do know it was a problem.

I'll keep yall posted.
