I need a little help trouble shooting some leaks and a driveline problem on my new truck
1990 302 Mazda M5OD
1) Power steering leak:
Looks like it leaking from the pump, is this possible? If so where would it leak? It is not coming from the rack connections. I can't really see the back side of the pump but there is fluid and gunk all over. Could it be leaking out of the pulley side?
It looks like the fluid is running down the side but I am not 100%, could it be anything else?
3) Oil Leak:
It seems to drip about 10 drops of oil from between the tranny and the block when I run it hard. I am thinking this is the rear main seal but that is just because I have heard a lot of people talking about this. If this is the problem the instructions in the Haynes don't see that hard, is this a DIY?
4) Driveline
I also have a drive line clunk that seems to be coming from drive line play. If the truck in neutral I can twist the drive shaft about 3/4" when it is in gear there is very little play. Any suggestions on this?
i cant answer any question except the oil leak one. mine laeks there also. yes it could be the rear main but more likely an oil pan gasket.clea it up underneath real good and do some exploringunder there. i do believe the rear main is a one piece seal on all power plants from1988 to1996. a realbig job the trans has to come out. i was quoted 600$ plus parts. the oil pan gasket is a little cheaper but ford labor time is 6 hours at about 70$ an hour. check it out real good and make sure you find the correct place its leaking. you dont want to spend major dollars and still have a leak. good luck.
Thanks for the advice. What would be a good cleaner to get all the "gunk" off? I used some simply green but I need something stronger. I am hoping you are right about the oil pan seal, I am sure I could handle that myself.
Tim,
I am about to tackle the oil pan gasket this weekend. I too though I might have a leaking front and rear main seal situation. I cleaned the undercarriage and It look like it may be the oil pan. There was fresh oil on the front and rear. My stering pump also leaks. Let me know how you make out.
you could use some gunk and then take it to the self serve carwash and pressure wash it off. or how about some spray carb cleaner. if you take it to the self serve make sure its clean then when you get home youll be able to inspect for the leak.
I've got a power steering leak as well. Not bad, but it makes the driveway look bad.... speaking of what can I use to get the stains off from oil and other leaks?
anyway, it drips from the frame near the bumper, but the leak is up nearer to where you fill it up. i can't find the exact spot though. i'm thinking maybe it's the tube or something like that but I really don't know... should I find the leak and drain it and fix it, or should i just not worry about it?
You can put me on this list as well. My '89 102K miles has leaks from the manual transmisson, on the rear of the block, the power steering pump also seems to have an oil film on it as of late. You can also add the transfer case as well. None of the leaks are bad but they do mess up the driveway.
I too am interested in the oil pan gasket replacement.
As far as the stains on the driveway, what I have done is to use some detergent degreaser and a broom to scrub it and then rinse it off. Typically it works pretty well except where my Chevy work truck leaked 90W on the driveway (The local Chevy dealer "repaired" the front differential output housing that no one knew was borke, with the same epoxy "that they use on the space shuttle". Lasted about 5 miles back to the house
