It is a 1991 Ranger 2.3L. When I first start it up on cool mornings, the idle revs up and down until it dies. Then you restart it and it does the same thing. If you drive it about a mile it runs smooth and idles fine. This started so I replaced the throttle position sensor and gave it a fresh tune up and new wires, Does anybody have any ideas???? The little truck runs so good other than that.
Have you checked the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve or the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor? Either one may be dirty and not working properly. Do not use carb cleaner, instead use a cleaner (throttle body cleaner) designed to clean the MAF sensor and the IAC valve.
Look in the Technical Information section, Engine, for information on cleaning the MAF
Let us know what you find out on these two components.

michigan66, thank you for the advice. When I find out where the MAF is located I will clean it. I have cleaned the IAC valve and I used throttle body cleaner.
grandmas77f150, I am sure the cooler weather has something to do with it, but once it warms up it is not a problem. It did not do this until it got cooler. I forgot to mention that I installed a K&N air filter and yes it was doing this before.
The MAF is located on the air filter box at the beginning of the air intake tube that goes to the throttle body. It is held in place with security screws. Harbor Freight carries the special screwdriver you need to remove the screws.
