I bought a new engine a few weeks ago and was told it was an 87. I did some digging and realized it had the old style rocker arms, so i am a little suspicious. I know on the intake manifold there's a serial number so i tried to see if there was any difference between my old and new one. I noticed on the old engine (1985) there's a circle with and 85 in it, and the new engine has a circle with an 83 in it. So did I buy an 83 or am i missing something?
could just be the parts they used, like a restamped injection pump. know what i mean? who did the engine come from? just some guy or a reman shop. If it was joe buttcrack, then i would be worried, if it was a reman shop, i wouldnt worry. Just you saying a new engine doesnt tell me much but i can only guess for now you mean a rebuilt one. if its new to you, not reman let us know.
no it was just new to me, It came from a joe buttcrack but he wasn't an idiot. he had an 7.3 psd bronco so i figure he know a little bit. Is there any way to tell for sure what year the engine is. I don't mind if its an 83 i got it for a really good price regardless of year, but I would just like to know.
On 6.9 and 7.3 IDI the can be identified by a permanent eninge number stamped on the front top left side of the engine. The first three positions indicate the engine displacement. The forth "D" indicated the engine is naturally aspirated. 5th and 6th digits indicate that the engine was built for truck use. The 7th "U" indicates is was built in the USA. The rest represent the engine serial number. Early 6.9 serial numbers below 59208 are know as 6.9 A engines. Numbers 59209 and above are 6.9 B engines. 7.3 serial numbers begin with 500001.
