So my water pump has been leaking, so I went and got a new one, and my buddy and I decided to tackle it last night. Well everything came off fine, until the very last bolt in the water pump, which broke off...it was where the water had been sitting/leaking, which was for lack of a technical term on the left hand side in the upper left corner. We were able to get the pump off, and also the end of the bolt that snapped with vice grips.
So then, as we were installing the new pump, the bolt that hangs the alternator snapped on us too...(yeah we should have just replaced those bolts!!) My question is, how would we get to that bolt that snapped - we were gonna take off the aluminum piece that the water pump mounts to, but weren't sure if it'd be worth it. So long story short, we got a larger bolt to actually thread into the water pump to simply hang the alternator bracket.
So my question is...do you all think the water pump will leak (we did put gasket sealer on it) Also, is there a way to get to that bolt that snapped that hangs the alternator or does it go to the block?
Sorry this is so long! And by the way my truck is an '86 with a 302.
Well, if all of the bolts are put tight in the water pump AND you put gasket sealant, you should have no trouble with the water pump leaking.
However, if one of the bolts is broken off in the water pump, better get that bolt out and put a new one in or else you are screwed.
About that hanger, I can't answer that question from the top of my head, but either way I'd check it out and do something.. can't just leave it hanging there.
Well what I mean is the one that broke off is way back in the hole, which is the same bolt which holds the alternator bracket...however we got a bolt that holds the alternator in the hole, but it's just not supporting the water pump seal at all. I guess I'll just have to wait and see...
