Fuel sender fixable?

Hey guys im wondering if you guys have any idea about the inner workings of the spare tank sender on a 77 F250 highboy, its not reading so i took it out and opened it up i need to know if the the peice that moves up and down inside the housing is supposed to be in contact with the reastat along the inside edge of the housing [the wires that go from narrow to wide] because as it is now i think i can fix it by sodering a small peice of copper on the moving peice but im not sure if thats how its supposed to be set up i dont want to create a situation where it would spark in there.

Thnks

I`m not quite sure of the wires but I would assume they need to contact. By the way there is no real worry of a spark occuring. All the sending unit does is take so much of the ground and sends it to the guage cluster where there is power to move the guage needle.
