so i managed to pull the old flathead 6 out with out busting anything, now i am considering what i am going to put in. i want a good reliable motor tranny setup, that will purr with a set of headers, but not a dragster. i have a deal on a 67 289 with a c4 auto. also have a deal on a 68 302 with a top loader 4 speed. my buddy the car guru,( all knowing just ask him) says the truck is too heavy for this setup, and i should go with a 351...i would assume the most economical way to go is to get a vehicle and pull the whole drive train out, this way i got the rear end too. what do you all think guys? gonna stay with a small block for sure.
all comments welcome.......newbie
either the 289 or the 302 is double the HP that old flathead 6 was ..and will move that truck just fine ..depending on the current rear gears it'll move anything you want as it's most likely a fairly low set ...4.10 4.56 5.13 5.88s ,,,but will be spinning fast on the road and sucking up gas like it's still 11 cents a gal ...changing to a later rear brings up the future brake jobs ,,, the fronts are orig ,,, now just what yr and model is that rear from ??ha ..example .. my 55 F250 --239 Y block had 5.88s when i got it ,,, would tow/haul anything with ease.. but it was all wound out at 60/65 mph .. and was getting a bit over 5 mpg ,,, the current rear is a 4.10 and is a bit tall for the 113 hp baby Y.. fine on the road and now gets about 10 mpg ... but she's a slug towing and dosen't pull a hard hill in 4th anymore ,,, it's down to 3rd now for the same grades ..
ya know thats what i was thinking, i figured from day one that truck rear would have to go. i'm sure it's original, 3.73 ford 9" seemed to be a fair replacement. and the old mustang motor , well i just really liked the one i had back in my younger days, but it was in the mustang. i know one thing, that flathead 6 was heavy, i pulled the motor and tranny with my forklift and i knew i had something on there if you know what i mean. i'm thinking that the small block ford is probably lighter
if it's just gonna be a toy and not really used as a working truck ,,,, towing ,,, hauling loads ,,, a 3,73 will be just fine ..all depends on the trans you go with ,,, a old 4 speed top loader and a C4 are both 1 to 1 final drive ,, if you find something like a AOD 4 speed you'r going to want a lower set .. 4,10s 4.56s
