I have a 92 f150 with a 351, i was thinking about putting a set of headers on, i was wondering if anyone has every put headers on a 351 before, and the difficulty of it. The price of a decent set would also be very helpfull to me. Anyone with any info would be appreciated.
Lots of people put headers on their 351. I have a set of MAC equal length shorties. They run about $250 for the pair. Summit Racing sells a set of shorties for around $150. There are quite a few people who use them and seem to like them. Installation is fairly simple, hardest part for me was getting all the manifold bolts out without breaking them. Headers are usually a direct replacement for your stock manifolds.
I put a set of JBA Shorties on my 94 F-250. They were a little expensive because of the dual AIR injection found on my Heavy Duty model. I payed like $550 for them. It in all honesty took 10 hours to swap them. The truck had 96K on it when i changed them. I had the heat every manifold stud to get them out. Plus i had to drop the Y pipe for clearence to the AIR ports then heat the 1-1/6 fittings to break them loose. Then i broke the tube that goes from the egr valve to the pass header (100 bucks from ford). The drivers side went on in about 10 min very easy all bolts within easy reach. The pass side was a differnet story. First off we heated one stud too much and snaped the head off of it, but i was lucky and put the header on and a nut over top of the shortedned stud. the front 7 bolts were not that bad even with the limited space. But on the farthest back bolt i had to custom make a wrench to fit the area. It looked like a twisted s. One person was under the truck. i was above and we each took a half turn at a time. after 10 min of turning one bolt we got a system down and one knew when the other was about to take over the turn.
This was aspecific case with athe AIR tubes and stuff yours dosent have them so you should be able to not drop the y pipe and knock about 2 hrs off time. I should also say that i had no oxygen for the tourches and had to go get some. plus i had to run to the ford garage for the EGR tube. I would start spraying it with penetrating lub every night after you park it for the evening for at least a few days. Get the fittings on the egr tube too.
You will also have to modify the dipstick tube mount, and the stut that holds the upper plenum.
Have on hand some antiseptic, bandaids, and pain meds because your gona smack your head off the hood a few times. Or drop the manifold on your foot/ fingers. They are havier than you think.
I hope i gave you a heads up, also headers arn't worth it unlest they have a high temp coating. Mine have a black coating applied that is the highest you can get. My engine temp went down a little after the swap.
Good luck.
