Hey everyone... I have a couple fairly easy questions. I have a 72 f250 camper special (I'm reasonably certain of this because of the dual batteries, and the gas tanks). My question arises from the fact that I have three gas tanks, one behind the seat and one on both sides. Was this a stock option or was it something that was done later?
My other question is about engine size. The person I bought it from said it has a 360 but from what I've read I think a 390 was more common in the camper special. Question is, how do I tell? Please bear in mind that my mechanical abilities leave much to be desired lol
Do the side gas tanks have a door on them or just a twist top like the in cab gas tank? If they have a door over the filler tube then they are aftermarket if no door then they are factory. The 360 and 390 are hard to tell apart someone correct me if I'm wrong but they use the same block just different internals I think the only way to tell them apart is by inspecting the internals
The gas tanks all have the twist tops, and they all operate off the same switch on the floor by the driver side door. The 360 and 390 do both use the same block, I was just hoping there was an easier way to tell what it is.... Thanks for the help!
measure the stroke the 360 has a 3.50 and the 390 has a 3.75" stroke. also the 360's have a half moon cut out of the crank flange where the flex plate/fly wheel bolts too.
My 71 f250 crew cab had 2 batteries on the inner fenders and 2 gas tanks under the bed the tanks were put on aftermarket because they have fuel doors on them which makes me think the batteries were put on aftermarket to mine had a camper on the back and the wiring looks cut and spliced which also makes me think all this was put on after it left the factory id be interested if they came like this from factory or got installed down the line batteries and wiring
I'm pretty sure a lot of my wiring was done after market too. I have all the wiring for a winch and my bumper was put on aftermarket as well... Wonder if my second battery was added later...
My '72 is a Ranger XLT. 1 battery. 3 gas tanks. The 2 in the bed are outside the frame and the fill is a twist cap accessed from the wheel opening. And a 3 way selector switch at the floor towards the rear of the seat.
Is that your type of gas tanks? I think mine are/were aftermarket. I have taken the 2 in the bed out. The bed outer fender supports (front ones) were removed to fit the gas tanks. When I removed them I noticed they were fiberglass.
The switch sounds exactly like mine but my tanks aren't in the bed. they are mounted to the frame underneath the bed behind the cab and in front of the rear tires. I'll try to get a pic to post tonight.
