4 speed shifter play
I have a 1950 F5 with the 4 speed non-syncro transmission. The gear shift lever has about 6" of side to side movement in each gear. The transmission functions fine except for the excessive movement in the lever. It is very loose and will move from side to side as you go around turns. It makes it very difficult to get a smooth 2 - 3 shift. Any ideas on what to look for?

Put the trans in neutral. Unscrew the cap on the shifter tower and pull the shift lever out. Check the locating pin in the side of the tower. The one in my pickup was worn to an hour-glass shape and allowed the "row-as-you-go" motion.
New pins are available and solved most of my problem. You could always drill it out and use an oversize pin if necessary.
