checking lifters

I have a 73 ford with a 390. I have a ticking noise that I can't pinpoint it's location. I now have the intake off and lifters out. I shook the lifters until all of the oil came out, but I can't push the lifters down. Is it even possible that they are all stuck? I bought the truck a month ago and don't know a lot about the history. I don't know if its sat around for a while or how long the motor has been ticking. Hopefully one of you guys can tell me how to test the lifters.

First of all...if you even think about reusing the lifters, I hope you know where each one came from and in which direction...or otherwise, you may as well go buy a new cam and lifter set.

Next, lifters are typically still good if they still have the radii on the ends...and this can be eye balled on a flat surface or against another lifter.

I still have them set to each one of there holes. They are not mixed up. Do you mean the ends should be a concave shape?

My next question would be, if my lifters still have a convex shape should my cam be good?

If you can collapse a lifter by hand, it's no good.

And to check your cam, it'll get more complicated than just reading your lifters.

Thanks for the help. I will check them when I get home. I just wondered about the cam as well because I was told the oil today needs a zinc additive to the oil. If you don't use the additive it can eat up your cam. If the lifters are good I will slap the intake back on then check the pushrods and springs. Thanks Ryan

The additive is more or less for for cam break in. But these hydraulic flat tappet engines do seem to like higher zinc content in their oil. I use rotella 15w40 in all of my dentsides.

No problem just figured it better fit in the engine forum since it's an engine question and posted letting you know and make sure it's at the top so the resident experts can give you some advice.
