Alright i have a 95 Ford F250, 351W, has about 195k miles on it give or take a few, and yesterday it was running really strong. I drove it last night to help a friend out. I parked it, let it sit for a few minutes, then started it and moved it again. I turned the truck off and let it sit for about 5 minutes, when i started it again it was fine, but when I put it unto drive, it acted like it wanted to keep going even though my foot was on the brakes. I would accelerate and it seems sluggish and almost like something was blocking something else, like it wasn't getting enough air. I parked it and left it alone since then, I'm in class and so i haven't gotten a chance to look at it yet. I'm thinking possible vacuum leaks, coil, spark plug wires, my explorer was doing the same thing not long ago and it was a misfire. could that be the problem?
A lot of things can lead to sluggish/poor performance. What interests me is that you say it seemed like it wanted to keep on going even though you were braking. Does it still seam to do this today?
Does it shift normally as you accelerate? If everything with the tranny seems fine, I would go straight to pulling codes. Anything else would be throwing part/money at the problem.
yeah its acting the same way. the tranny is shifting just fine, and it seems to have been improved from yesterday a tiny bit, but it's still sluggish when i accelerate and i have no code scanner for OBD1 and the check engine light isn't coming on...
I don't have a cat, the only thing on my exhaust is the headers and some pipes...^_^ so idt anything is plugged..plus it's never given me a problem before...
the only code it's throwing is my EGR sensor...and it was doing that for about a month and it never affected performance or anything...even when i start it up you can hear a difference...like i said it's very sluggish on the throttle, it's almost like something is blocking something else..
a friend of mine said his was doing the same thing and his cam was flattened....now i dont think it's my cam cause it happened instantly there wasn't any overtime effects it just started...
I had the egr code on my old 95 with the "custom exhaust" like yours, but it never made the truck run poorly. Have you checked tranny fluid? check to see when you accelerate if the engine boggs, or if the engine revs but the truck is a bit slow.
Alright well I guess I am stumped to give you any kind of diagnosis at this point so I would start with the basics... An engine needs compression, spark, air and gas... so...
1.) compression test
2.) check spark plugs for fouling, burning hot, check for good spark, etc...
3.) check rotor and cap too...
4.) air filter and hoses to throttle body... obvious but I have neglected dumber stuff myself.
5.) fuel pressure at the rails
6.) when was the last time you took your injectors off to clean and rebuild them?
alright been bared down with classes, but i'm able to get on now. Anyways! I have checked for good compression, spark plugs are good, i have good injectors, I recently took apart the plenum and fuel rail and took out the injectors to clean them. Cap and Rotor are pretty good, and everything if in operable condition. I unplugged the Throttle positioning sensor and It made absolutely no difference what so ever. So i'm leaning more towards a bad TPS...it's poor sluggish performance with acceleration, idles kind of weird, and the tranny fluid is good, it shifts perfectly...
if it's noticeably rich smelling, I might lean towards the O2 sensor. If that O2 sensor is working, it should correct for an over rich condition. You could unplug it so the computer defaults to the stock mixture tables and see if this makes a difference.
