The shift indicator on the dash is connected to the shift tube on the column by a little wire cable.
If you remove the column shroud where the column meets the dash you should see where the inner wire cable is hooked on to the shift tube and where the outer cable is fixed with a single screw to the dash. There is a slotted hole in the outer cable fixing bracket so if you loosen the screw you can slide the outer cable and so adjust where the indicaror will read.

I just adjusted the shift indicator on my 1991 F250 Lariat. The threads seem to have it all wrong.

My adjustment was made at the end of cable just before it attaches at the steering column end, not up at the cluster end.

and to give perspective, here you can see the cluster.

I loosened the screw holding the white piece to the column and then moved it in the slot to get the indicator to work properly.
