Engine swap options, years?

Need an engine for my 90 F350, 4x4, 351, auto. What years work, guessing 88-95? Where there diff.. in trannys or computers etc.? I have an 89 f-250 available locally but it's pretty far away. I also have '96 f250 351 auto near by. will this work or is it a hassle hookup wise? Finally if I found a 460 auto 88-95 would this bolt in? there's one with the computer but truck is gone. thanks guys! Good to have an old Ford around the place again!

I'd take the 96'. The block is roller and is also maf. The 90 has a non roller and is speed density.

Isn't the 96 when they switched to ob2 and shouldn't it have a diff computer and everything? Not sure on my tranny either, so I'd like to swap this with the engine.

Can I use a engine and tranny out of a 2wd truck? guessing the tranny is totally diff or is it just the tail housing on it?

as far as trans goes your original trans will be fine as long as its happy with a new computer if you run the E4OD and get the 96 engine.. all bell housings are the same from the 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8

the 2wd cannot be swapped into a 4wd.

myself if the 89 is a strong engine from what you can tell i would use it if you are looking for the fastest and easiest swap in my opinion

you could use the 96 engine and just use your current computer and sensors, minus the crankshaft position sensor the 96 will have.

+1 You don't need to change a single wire on your truck, simple get another 5.8 and put it in where your motor is now. There is no significant difference between a 5.8 in an OBD-1 or OBD-2 vehcile so it doesn't matter what year truck the motor comes from or what type EFI system is running it, the motor will work perfectly in your truck using the existing engine harness and computer.

Ok guys, The guy with the 96 never got back to me, went down and grabbed the '89. It's an F 250 4x4, same engine and trans etc. it has 73K original miles on it. truck has some other good parts as well , rear axle is blown but minus an exaust tick it fired right up and seams to run good even after sitting for a few months. His machanic tried to limp it around on the front axle but one of the u joints broke. I had a hard time testing the tranny without drive shaft but it did spin when I put it in gear. And its a 2 owner truck with a know history which is meant to be good. Oh got it for $500 so after I'm done with getting all the parts I need off it I'll probably get my $500 back when I scrap whats left.

While the engine and trans is out what should I do? I was thinking
Water pump
Manifold gaskets and bolts
oil pan gasket
Rear main seal
Plugs
Change fluids

What else should I do just since it's so easy while it's out?
What about the transmission?
pull pan and new gasket
New cooler lines?
What else?
Is there any relatively not to expensive/ easy upgrades I should do for this tranny while it's out?

What about the transfer case?

Another question is exhaust. looks like there is an air tube to the cat, Will it effect how it run if I pull the cat and just run without it or is that just OBII?

Thanks Guys!
