292 needs more help

first, thanks to everyone who helped out with me getting the correct water pump. got that all buttoned up today. when i started it up to bleed the air out of the radiator and engine the oil filter and adapter started to gush oil. when i bought the truck it had the adapter to switch from can to canister oil filter and over the years it leaked worse and worse, so last year i took it apart, replaced the gasket and cleaned up the fitting, put it all together and everything was good till today. has anyone had any luck with these adapters or should i try to go back to the original big can. or do i need to just buy a new adapter. the old one looked ok and cleaned up good. any help would be great, and when i say its leaking, i mean leaking. probably a quart in twenty miles. it is leaking between the block and adapter and between the adapter and oil filter.

Thundersnow, please check out this article on removing and reforming the filter adapter.

Oil Filter

Sometimes the rubber gasket from the old spin on filter will stick to the block, or in your case, the adapter. You could have spun the new filter on top of that old gasket.I have done that, and always check the old filter now to make sure it came off.

You can always just buy a new adapter,or go back to the cannister if you still have your old one.

thanks for the link ibuzzard. i will try that before i buy a new adapter. and i didnt get the factory canister so that is out for now. i am sure it doesnt have the old gasket between the spin on filter and the adapter, i have done that once and once was enough. nothin like pumpin all the oil out of mom and dads brand new van while driving down the road. that lesson has stayed with me for a while. i found another thread on fte 61-63 292 and it talks about two plates. mine just has the one. wonder if i am missing one?

ive done that before after pouring my oil in i turned it on and oil shooting out everywhere from the oil filter it. took me 2 inspections to catch the extra gasket between the mount and the filter...
i went in there thinking this will be done in 15 minuets and not using enough light.
luckily my wife didnt see the mess i made!

This photo shoes the adapter I have. Been too long for me to remember the gaskets, but it has never leaked.

i only have the one on the left, with the two slots next to the edge. gonna take it apart today and measure it like the link ibuzzard posted. got to thinking to, when i put it together, i used black permatex, dont know if it is rated for that much heat. gonna use copper the next time.
