I scored a set of axles out of a 76-77? with 4.11 gears and posi front and rear off of cl for 150. The front has 4.09 stock gears with a trac-lok. The rear is 28spline 4.11 gears with a 4 pin posi. The seller also threw in a extra pair of rear shafts. I am swapping the complete housing in the front out of my 76, and swapping just the drop out in the back.
I always thought these trucks with 9s in them always came with 31spline axles. Is it just the early years or something?
Wow, great deal. I'd love to have those trac-loc units for my truck. To my knowledge that 9 inch should have 31 spline axles. What makes you think they are 28? Maybe because the spares or 28s? Maybe the spare 28s came out of a car? I could be wrong here but I've just never seen 28 splines in a truck of this vintage.
Your front axle lock outs do look like 76/77 but that steering linkage is from a 78/79 which is a common swap, I'm getting read to do that to my 1977. I have all the parts.
I counted the splines on all 4 shafts total I got. There necked down 28 spline shafts with the 3 holes on the end witch usually indicate 31 spline. It sure has me puzzled. Laste year when I re-sealed my stock axle, I found it to be 28 spline too. The guy even found the other steering rod that goes to the pitman arm. I wanted to upgrade anyway from the inverted y crap.

Well I stand corrected. I've never ran into the 28 splines, I guess I've been lucky. I guess as long as you haven't had any trouble with them breaking so far you should be ok.
