i have a 1980 f-150 ranger with a 351m and 2v heads. i was planning on putting on a Weiand action plus intake manifold (2 plane) and then i was wondering on waht kind of carb i should put on. i was thinking an edlebrock performer 600 or edelbrock thunder series 650. or if i should even do it at all.
A 600 or 650 CFM (but no bigger IMHO) would be good on 351M/Weiand dual-plane combo
but you'll want to combine it with headers & a straight-up timing chain set.
The 335 forum here is a really good place for talking about the M-block engines (I have one,
too) and you can sometimes find some really knowledgeable guys in there. There's also a
lot of good info in the archives of that forum (use the Advanced Search and look ONLY in
that forum for specific keywords).
alright that sounds good! thanks. but what is this straight up timing chain? i have herd about them but dont know much about them. i already have headers on it and duals it also has an rv cam in it. its just a slight cam no thumper or anything like that.
not all timing sets can be set to advanced or retarded . on stock timing sets there is only
one way to install and that is to line up the dots ! after market sets will have several sets of dots to chose from . http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sourc...Je10VtbIlqFyuQ
I would not run an Edelbrock. Holley will always be better for performance. On a stock or mild engine the difference may be minimal though, but a Holley is still preferable since they simple fit better on a Ford (vacuum lines, kickdown, return, etc.). I would run a 650 CFM 4150, preferably double pumper.
you say a holley is better for a ford! i didn't know that because i bought the Edelbrock 600 1406 for my truck with the preformer dual plane intake. it started on my 302 & will be put on my 351w i do have the intakes for both engines.
Your Edelbrock 600 will work fine on a 351w. You're leaving power on the table, but in a stock application it's negligible. Edelbrock does make some good intakes. The Performer is generally comparable to an iron 4v factory intake, but works well on stock engines.
well my engine won't be stock at all gt-40 heads with stainless steel valves 2.02 intake & 1.94 exh, roller tip rockers, steel crankshaft, keith black .040 over pistions and a mild cam
Sounds pretty mild. What port work have you done to the heads? Are they factory Gt40 heads or aftermarket? What cam are you running? What pistons? If this thing is mild, then your Edelbrock 600 will be fine. Probably leaving more power on the table than I originally thought, but still sounds like a mild build that you haven't sorted all the details.
they are stock heads from a 96 explorer, keith black flattop pistions, not sure which cam it is. so you say get a ho;;ey carb to see more gains huh! i still can get another carb if needed.i can always sell the 1406.. which holley???
Not saying they're not decent heads, should be a good upgrade over the older style heads, but we're still talking factory components. Any port work? What cam?If you're running a Performer intake you won't be revving to the moon anyhow. You'd likely see more power from a 4150 style 650 CFM.
