5.0 transplant

I found a mercury wagon with a nice 5.0 FI motor. I,m putting it in my 48 F2 and I'm not that experianced at this. My first question for starters is about the electronics. When looking at the motor I'm not sure what I'm looking at and What do I need to keep and what I can toss. Thankx Dennis

The FI system is very good on these engines but you don't have to keep them, the engine can be converted to a carb/distributor setup fairly easily. Just another option in case you get frustrated with the PCM/ECU wiring. As for what to keep and what to toss...anything that is connected to the engine has to stay as well as the O2 sensors in the exhaust. The rest is a little trickier...it all depends on how much control circuitry there is in the rest of the car. You may have an electronic throttle, you may have a theft deterence system, A/C controls, Body Control Module (BCM), the list goes on. I have a lot more experience with GM than I do with FOMOCO so I can't help you too much with specifics. You may want to look at other forums on this site to see if you can't get some more specific help in this area. There are also non-OEM sources for ECM/PCMs like Megasquirt but you really have to have a passion for the "geek side" of this hobby to get into those devices. Good luck..

Knowing the year of the Merc donor car would help these guys to figure this out for you.

I used a 91 Crown vic as a doner.I saved everything.I will be using the harness for the lights as well and the fuse panel.I am going to take anything out of the harness not need and use the rest.A engine wiring diagram would help you to keep the engine harness seperate.I am an auto tech so rewiring it with this harness will not be to much trouble.

i did the same thing as reg952, my donor was a 89 crown vic, i`ve pulled out every piece of harness the car has, if you go on e-bay there is a guy selling master wiring diagrams from ford, there your best bet, i tried going the service manual way but they don`t have the wiring info needed, i removed the loom and removed the circuits i didn`t need (theres lots of them) i just have to fit it into the truck once i have a bit of time.
-you can also just remove the complete engine harness and tap into it, i believe there`s only 3 or 4 wires to tap into to get the engine running+ hooking up your fuel pump
