Well, after a lot of work, my cooling system is in tip top shape. I built a coolant filter for it before I did the egr and oil coolers, did the flush, and on the final one, I got a bunch of ATF in the drain pail. I assumed the cooler had sprung a leak, and ordered a new rad. When I pulled the old one out, this is what greeted me. Unbelievable!! Probably 80% plugged! (Lousy picture from a $100 phone in a dark shop) That's solid grass and fuzz, 2 inches thick.
I used to think the 6.0's clutch fans were a POS, now I realise that between me having a weatherfront on (admitted in another thread, and removed 2 months ago) and the plugged rad, the thing had no choice but to come on. It would go up to 215, the fan would come on and take it back to 178, and the process would start all over again. Now it's rock solid at 192-195.
And upon closer examination of the rad, I think the old one just had a bad rubber seal, as the cooler is loose inside the rad and is secured with the external cooler line nuts.
Some folks have a hard beliving all the crud that can get stuck between the cores.. Some flat black paint after cleaning will help too transfer heat and improve cooling more.....Good post..
