63 4 on the tree?

Hey all,

I have 78 F100 with a 3 on the tree. I love the old style trans with the shifter on the column but I don't like reving at three grand doing 80. I've heard that they used to have a four speed on the column in 1963 vans that can be swapped into seventies trucks. Is this true?

Not sure if it was on the column, I think it was an electric OD unit just like the trucks.
3000rpm at 80 is not bad. Why are you doing 80 in a 63?
Seriously a four speed will not drop your cruising rpm as top gear in the 3 and 4 speed tyranny's are 1 to 1 ratio.
If you wish to drop the revs you need one or more of the following combos.
1) Change rear end ratio's from what you have now to a smaller number ex: you have 3:73 go to 2:56
2) Change to an Over Drive tyranny.
3) Get really tall tires

Best of luck

It's not the 63 I'm doing 80 in, it's a 78. So there is no 4 on the tree? Sounds like it wouldn't matter if there was. Can you put an OD unit behind a 3 spd?

Just FYI, The 4-speed in the Econline you are refering to is a Dagenham 4-speed, Close ratio and VERY light duty, It will blow up in a pickup.

Get OD or change ratios,

Yes there was a factory OD added on to a 3 speed that would use the three on the tree. However there are some big consernce about these. They have a free wheel in them so if your in OD and you back out of the gass the engine spped drops but the truck does not. Some people say don't tow with them.
I'm still looking to find one localy. There wqas a truck one and a car one the car unit was lighter duty.

Your best bet is to change out the rear gears it's not hard at all as you most likely have a front loading 9" rear. You should be able to find gears under $100 used in your local want add.

The three speed + overdrive you are refering to is a Borg-Warner 3speed, not the more common Ford 3.03 3-speed.
