460/390 flywheel

I got a buddy who wants to swap out his 460 c-6 to a 4-speed, however, we do not have a 460 flywheel... We do have plenty of 390 ones...If both engines are zero balance, and the flywheel bolts up to the crank, and the starter gear from the 390 is used, is this a viable swap? Thanks...

Dont believe that will work. Two completely different engine families.

Yeah you can use the 390 flywheel on '78 or older 460, the '79 and later 460 went to an external balance.

I have a stock flywheel off of my 460 which is the later model year. It was used on the NP435 trans. I upgraded to a Hayes 35lbs flywheel and didn't have any problems with the stock one. PM me.

After I read my post again I don't think it sounds right. My flywheel is of the external balance clan. Sorry for the confusion.

...thanks for the help...i believe his 460 is about a 73-34 Lincoln, in a 73 F150 4x4...i remember reading some older threads about swapping out a 390 for a 460 (or was it a 400?) and the general consensus was that the 390 flywheel would work on either, zero balance and starter gears considered...shame to waste a freshly surfaced 390 'wheel...

OK, this is the way the old timers use to do it before there were any kits. Use an 351M 400 bell housing, a 460 (of course why would you be here)the fly wheel and clutch off your 360/390 and motor mounts from the factory it should do the trick. Of course the exhaust and oil pan are home made but you know in the old days if it could'nt be bought you made it.

...good to know there's still a few of us "old schoolers" who don't mind fabricating something or rooting around a boneyard...thanks again...
