Since my '86 F150 4X4's timing chain jumped a cog and it's too cold outside to get it fixed I had to resort to using my '79 Grand Marquee as a daily driver. Problem was it's been sitting for about two months and it's sat pretty much all it's life. (Only 70,000Km original) Well, I froze for two days driving it to work and was getting desparate. Seems like the heater core was plugged so just for the hell of it I drained out some antifreeze and unhooked the hose connections from the heater core to the engine. Then armed with a roll of duct tape I taped the nozzle of a wet shop vac to the heater hose & turned it on for awhile. Then I reversed the connections & did it again. Repeated this about 4 times. Finally, I got some hot boiler condensate from the steam plant and poured it in while the vac was running. Repeated the process in both dirrections. Guess what, Have I got heat now or what!! I know it's maybe just a quick fix but it's a lot easier replacing the heater core when it's not -40C outside. Hope this works for someone else too.
