Hey guys I am going to be replacing the steering wheel on my 08 F 450 (the leather is looking funky and I don't like covers) I think I remember reading somewhere on here the procedure for removing the steering wheel without getting a facefull of airbag. Anyone know the procedure or remember the thread where it was posted? Thanks for any info.
You know, I have the same the problem with mine. I am going to talk to my dealer about warranty on this. If they don't go good on it, are you going back to stock? or did you find something better? I really don't think it's right that something like that should only last 2 years anyways.
I am going back with the stocker. I have not really pressed my dealer on this but I have heard of others getting them replaced under warranty. I agree that you would think that it should hold up better. For what it is worth mine is tan (camel) and the color has come off leaving it a nasty looking grayish color in certain areas.
That's warranty fix, mine did it too at about 50k (I got 82k ish now)and I played hell. If it were under 36k was their bs line. My truck's only 28 months old and I bought it new with hard earned cash. Sure it gets worked hard but I take care of it. My european vehicles don't do this...
Are you sure the color has come off and is not just covered with dirt? I have the tan/camel interior also and mine has looked real ratty and dark a few times. I used a leather cleaner from an auto supply store and it came out looking like new.
Mine is starting to look like chit also. I am going to talk with my dealer about it. I hate to be so picky but when you pay as much as they charge for these trucks it, including the steering wheel leather color, should last more than 23,000 miles.
Yes the color has actually come off. I thought it was just dirt but when I used the leather cleaner it still looks the same. When you look closely you can see the raw leather in those areas. Mine even has the color coming off on the spokes. I have heard of some guys replacing their tan ones with the black hoping that it will last longer or hold up better.
I have gone thru this with three truck now, the oils in your hands begin to eat up the leather on the wheel and the color comes off etc. First one I took to the dealer they told me they would replace it once after that it was out of pocket...
Second rig they would not replace as it is a wear item and they can not control what is on my hands to cause the wear.
Third rig, 08 450KR is doing the same thing. What I know is the leather in these rigs is cheap and will not withstand harsh anything that includes sweaty hands, hard leather cleaners etc. I am currently toying with the idea of recovering on my own with some think good quality leather.
It funny my ole Benz doesn't have this leather problem.......
