The ignition module may be going out. I always carry a spare one. They are poorly made now a days.

In short, the 3 stages of a Duraspark module failure are:

1) Truck dies and immediately starts back up again.
2) Truck dies and doesn't start until module cools down.
3) Truck dies and doesn't restart - module's dead.

I also carry a spare - it's on the 1st stage of failure, but I figure it's good enough for emergencies...

Have you inspected the wires? Check them in the dark, maybe mist them with water just before you start the engine. If that does'nt show anything, check each wire with an ohm meter.
Have you tried a fresh set of sparkplugs?

If you see the timing jumping around, it could be from wear in the timing chain or distributor bushings.

I gotta admit, I have a spare module in my truck as well.

I'll mention this just for giggles, I once had a "no start" problem that occured intermittenly. I finally found a broken wire on the pickup coil under the vac advance plate in the distributor.

yes the plugs are less than a month old, im beginning to beleive its in module or the wireing between the distributor and the module, the distributor, wireing harness and module are the only things that havnt been replaced

It's also possible the pickup module in the distributor is on its way out. This is the sensor that tells the ignition module when to fire the coil. It's just as guilty as the ignition module but is commonly overlooked. You can check it for an open or short by disconnecting the distributor and measuring the resistance between the ORANGE and PURPLE wires at the distributor. The resistance should be between 400 and 700 ohms. However, chances are the issue is heat-related, and won't show up in steady-state. Measuring the resistance doesn't really tell you much since the pickup module is a Hall effect sensor and is not purely resistive, but it will identify catastrophic failures.

i agree with them before you buy a module check your sparke plug wires. Make sure one is not cracked or slitly tore. That can cause a intermeting problem.

Also if you aren't 100% positive take in your module I used to test them all the time for people I would say 6 outa 10 times it was the module but hey theres style that other 4. If you have a big name parts store around they should be able to check it for free. I know checkers shucks and kragan all used to before Oreilly's bought em out and my Oreilly's will still happily check em out.
