axle lube

The lube in the axle of my F-350 is a brown color, some what like the color of coffee with cream mixed in it. I changed the lube last spring for the same reason, and since I changed it I only put about 1,500 miles on it, and they were easy miles, just pulled my camper with it. Why is this oil turning this color?

Thanks,

Ken

Could be sludge in the axle tubes being washed away into the fresh oil. Do you drive thru deep water? Might be water getting into the pumpkin. Do you have a limited slip and if so are using limited slip additive or oil that already has it?

I don't drive through any deep water, It's all been highway miles. I did how ever just changed the brakes and bearings and when I pulled the axles, I looked down the axle tube and there is some crud on the top of the tube. The question now is what should I do to get rid of it, or is it ok to just leave it there.

Thanks for your reply,

Ken

i dont see why the sludge build up in your axle tubes would hurt and thing as long as it was not severe, however next time you have the axle apart it would't hurt to clean it up a little.

I need to change the rear axle lube on my truck. Any help on what lube and which additive for my limited slip? Where is a good place to get it all?

Probably should know more about the axle from the guy asking what lube. But in general...

The usual GL5 lube is the most common one for axles. I prefer a synthetic but the dino is fine. Depending on what year and where you live, I would probably go with something like a 75W90. You might go 90W140 but I would probably only recommend that for hot climates or heavy duty.

You will probably need some limited slip additive. I use StaLube brand. Comes in a toothpaste tube. My F250 use two tubes(8oz each) for the diff. Your truck might be different.

Don't take these recommendations as Bible since we don't know enough about your axle. But I would guess this fits 90%+ of limited slip Ford diffs.

Good Luck,

I guess I should have been more specific. It is a 95 F250 with a limited slip in the rear, 3.55 gears and I live in Kansas City where in the summer it is in the upper 90's. One more thing is do you use the sillicon type tube gasket or something else? The reason I want to do it myself is because a friend just paid $125 at the dealer to have them do it.
