I have been trying to fix the key switch in the tailgate (for raising/lowering the glass) for the last couple of days, and still haven't got it working. The old switches had died, so I put in a set yesterday, and they didn't work at all. I managed to find another set today, and spliced that set in to have it not work either. After much frustration I finally tried it without the switch using the hot wire & a ground connection, and that didn't work either! There is power at the hot wire, but as soon as it is connected to the window motor, it cuts out. I know the motor works, as the dash switch works. I swapped the circuit breaker with the one for the dash switch, and the same thing happens. I've got two thoughts going at the moment:
1 - the circuit breakers are "tired" and need replacing
2 - there is a wiring problem between the cb & the tailgate that causes the cb to trip when a load is applied to it.
Just as an update, I have replaced both circuit breakers with new ones, and the same thing happens - it works perfectly from the dash, but the tailgate key switch does nothing. Any help would be appreciated!
I would check for a ground fault...there are a couple of articles about troubleshooting the tailgate electronics posted by other members. Steve83 has posted one such article. I was going to try to describe a procedure for checking the tailgate harness with a meter but its too long and contrived to post. the aricles can be more thorough anyway.
You have high resistance in the power wire to the t/g switch. Trace it along the L frame rail and look for a kink or pinch. You can connect it to the motor in the t/g like you did to test it and then probe the wire along the frame with a stickpin, checking for the spot where it goes hot again. It could be inside the connector behind the L taillight.
I was thinking along the same lines after replacing the circuit breakers & having the same problem. I'll probably just run a new wire from the cb to the tailgate & into the switch.
