I have a c6 in my 1979 bronco. It was rebuilt about 7000 miles ago and i went 4 wheeling about a week ago and it was raining and cold out and we started it up reved it and went and when i got on the main road out of the parking lot it wouldnt shift into 3rd or 4th. It stuck in second i beleive at 25 miles and hour and i had to rev it and push it to shift, but once it shifted it was fine for the rest of the night. This happened one time before about 4 months ago. I parked it that night, went home the next day and the same thing happened i had to push it to shift it. It even took longer this time. When i got home to change all the fluids and filters, the tranny fluid was like a brownish color and smelled burnt and it was a horrible smell. Well after the change of fluids and filters all around the tranny still wont shift. Does this mean it is shot completely or something might be off since it still shifts when you rev it high and push it. Thankyou.

If it is a c-6 then it does not have a 4th gear, they where 3 speed trannys. I ran into the same problem when i switched motors and trannys in my truck, my problem was the kick down linkage got hung open in the full throttle postion. the truck ran fine but i had to hit about 30 before it would shift into 2nd, it would also down shift earlier than normal. just a idea, and maybe a place to start, good luck
try the kickdown linkage and the vacume lines. mine came disconnectwed a while back and i had to shift it manually intil i found out that the vacume lines were disconected.
If it is the shift linkage or the vacuum line, how would i go about fixing the two. Is it just readjusting the shift rods and all and where exactly is the vacuum line located and how do i fix that. Thankyou. Also what would have caused the oil in the transmission to burn and turn brown like that, is it just cause it was haveing to rev higher to shift and it was running hot or just that it hasnt been changed in a while. It only has 7000 miles on it. Thankyou.

My 86 had this problem as well. It was a vacuum line that came disconnected. I just plugged it in and all was fine.
Check along the back near the firewall and rear of your manifold for any broken or disconnect tubing. R&R as required.
