I want to put a mild cam in my truck and was wondering what would i need to replace besides the chain and lifters. The truck has over 100.000 miles on it but still runs strong with no issues. motor- 390 with performer intake, holley 600, hedders, flowmaster exhaust, pertronix ignition .What would be a good choice of cam and any tips on installation ?
You did not say what year the 390 was but there are a lot of 360s running around as 390s..A 360 is just a short stroked 390 with polution heads and cam..A better cam will really wake up a 360 or a 390..I think the other post was right..Get the cam thats made for the intake..Big tube headers and flow masters will help also..good luck... bill
its a 69 ranger. Definately a 390 .I measured the stroke through the spark plug hole. Its a beast. Should i change any thing else like the chain or pushrods?
In my 390 rebuild, I used a mild Comp Cam with new valve train, lifters and pushrods. Has a slight rough idle but really woke that old girl up. Of course the 4bbl, Perf intake, headers, and a few other goodies didnt hurt either. The nice thing about those bolton parts is that you dont have to do it all at once. Didnt get too crazy, as we have to make our trucks pass a smog test every yr. Once in awhile, I get some flack for changing the carb and diz, but I kept the paperwork that shows that these are legal parts, as they were options when you ordered a new truck.
