Hey guys i tried to look in the tech folders for this but couldn't find anything. May not have been doing it right but just wanted to know what some things i can do to improve deisel mpg. I have an 04 6.0 psd fx4 with around 115,000 miles on it. In town i get around 13 mpg and would like to see a few more miles per gallon. Thanks for any suggestions or if you could lead me to some older posts regarding the same issue.
My opinions:
In town, racing the smaller cars from stop light to stop light, that is what you will get for MPG. You are trying to repetedly stop and quickly accellerate a 7000lb truck. The smaller cars weigh half as much. It's simple physics and it can't be changed.
But, if you are not racing from light to light, and you are letting all of the smaller cars pass you and cut you off, and you try, if even possible for existing traffic conditions, to time the red lights and not stop the truck all of the way, you will get better MPG.
The fact is that begining with the 6.0 and latter models, our trucks can really haul donkey and keep up with over 90% of what is on the road. But if you drive it that way, fuel milage will suffer.
Accelerate slowly, if you can't avoid stopping, at least avoid stopping abruptly by anticipating the upcoming lights.
How many of us have accelerated to a red light so that the cars next to us will not get in front of us? Huge fuel waster. Let them go. No one in a small car wants to be behind a large truck, let alone one that is diesel.
