low power

I have a f350 91 7.3 n/a 4.10 5spd 7300lbs 3in exh, it has newish bb code injectors with 15,000 kms on them, and now a rebuilt 5070 turbo calibrated pump. The compression is good with the lowest 400 and the highest 450. The power with the new pump is quite a bit better off the line but it pulls hills the same as the old pump (85 kph 6% grade unloaded). When I put new injectors in and even the old ones it would pull the same hills easy. The new pump also smokes black at about 1/2 throttle, anything over that and it will cover a small car in smoke. It has been losing power since i started running wmo in it at about 50% diesel and 50% wmo with 75/25 diesel gas mix so not much gas. Ive probably ran about 400 litres of the mixed fuel through the engine since June. I work at a shop so when someone puts alot of diesel in there gas vehicle I just burn it in my truck. I thought my pump was shot so I put a rebuilt one on, and not much change in power. Could have the little bit of gas ruined my injectors or could my pre cups be coaked? Also the truck runs great with not much smoke when cold. I am also running pure diesel since I put the pump on.

Running WMO/diesel blend (30/60 blended with cetane) in my truck ruined the IP, Injectors and return kit after about 4 months. It ran great to begin with then steadily started losing power. When I took the IP off it was filled with particulate from the WMO.

You're supposed to filter the WMO and the WMO blends to prevent that..... When you replaced your IP did you have it properly timed? If you're worried about all that black smoke.....I'd suggest (if your timing is right) backing the fuel screw off a bit, it might be throwing too much fuel into your system.

I filter the wmo down to 8 microns with a Donaldson spin on fuel filter. I'm also gonna try turning the fuel down to reduce smoke.

youre just probably running less compression from all that black smoke burning up the pistons, its really no big deal. Oh and the K&N letting all that dirt past will be killing compression with the cylinder walls wearing away etc etc. lol. ditch the k&n, adjust the IP properly and time it right, you know.....the common sense things. Diesel owners and gassers that run K&N's just dont know better yet. Hey, its ok....you had to learn how to walk too right?

Cetane is the primary ingredient in Diesel Kleen. It is also added to diesel fuel up north as an anti-geling agent. How can it be bad for the idi?

Cetain is to diesel what octain is to gasoline. The higher the number the more energy you get from the fuel.

where is your logic?^^^^^^ the more energy you get from the fuel?....... thats a good thing. the more completely the fuel is burnt and the more energy transfered to the crankshaft versus being lost as heat is what we want. more power. more energy = more power. cetane is a good thing

ok well my experience is going to throw us off some i think.
K&N filter = working great on my rig.however im not running my truck in a dusty environment.i keep it washed and oiled.
iv run them in other vehicles and never experienced a problem either.

my truck doesn't like the cetane boost in diesel kleen.iv noticed a drop in fuel economy using it regularly.
however i do not know where timing is yet.the timing has to do a lot with cetane rating of the fuel.
what iv noticed is people who use it and see an increase is with older ips/injectors.so im guessing it helps when timing is too retarded.but im not sure.

-end of first hand experience.

i recall Mel stating once, that people running advanced timing for todays fuel is actually backwards.he stated we should be slightly retarded to compensate for it.so im all mixed up.
he will be running some tests soon for timing, and i'll be getting a meter too.i'll be running many tests with tiny increments of timing over a long period of time.

one things likely for sure, increasing the cetane and having the proper timing set to match it has to be the best combo.

you should turn your fuel down.you also should not have gotten the turbo pump for the n/a i don't think
(its said, even the n/a pump can be turned up to make even a turbo engine roll coal.)
if you have a timing meter, try 9.5 for running WMO.
you should have a pyrometer.
no pyro,no timing meter, running WMO,could lead to disaster as your blind to whats happening.you could burn out the rear 2 cylinders in a hurry.keep that CDR clean.
1/2 throttle rolling coal will lead to disaster.

i really like that write up. love seeing empirical evidence!! first hand is the best kind. most of us have our rigs where we want them, running haha. But for some of us, like me, i like to press a bit on that proverbial envelope. When i went up 1.5 flats, i still cant roll out black so i know for a fact the pump was detuned. Which is why i did it in the first place. felt low on power. Now i have a slight haze zipping up a hill, and nothing at 1/2 throttle or even a puff. Just a slight puff of smoke at start up and then it clear, even when cold. Understanding the sound of a properly tuned idi is something akin to an art form. when you have heard a factory idi tuned from the factory, it sounds really really quiet, not loud and chattery. my bit of rattle is from my engine needing a bit of timing attention but i just cant bear the cost of these vancouver island yahoos asking for 3 hours labor to tune my idi, they are friggin crazy. its an hour at most. Either way, with the right amount of common sense in the noggin, amazing times can be had with these rigs, keep up on seasonal maint and you will always be smiling! enjoy i know i do!!

I also run the K&N since I don't run the truck in dusty environments. Ive seen what happens when they are run in dust, they pass alot of dirt and ruin an engine. I bought the turbo cal pump since I'm building a factory turbo motor, and mite as well get the turbo pump. I have turned the pump down 2 flats and barely see smoke wide open, so now she wont burn down, even though I watch the exh like a hawk for smoke to prevent that. I also pulled all my injectors and found my pre cups coked up bad from running wmo. The holes for the injectors were closed up and had only a tiny little hole for the pintle of the injector nozzle. I cleaned them out with a screwdriver, and now it runs like a completely different animal. It runs cleaner, idles smoother, runs harder, and starts alot faster. Because of this I am now only running it on diesel from now on. Thanks.
