177,000 miles. 97 psd. yesterday on my way home I noticed my engine temp was inbetween the a and the L on normal. when I would let off the go pedal and coast it would go down (like a sticking t-stat). at every stop sign this thing was smoking white bad out of the exhaust. I kept it in the safe zone as far as temp goes and the truck still ran the same as allways. oil is clean nut i did have to put water in this morning. same exact thing on the way to work but only go up to about the m on normal, then it just went down to the n where it usually runs and at the few last stop signs i didnt get any white smoke that i could see. park in my spot at work, still running where it should on temp. and got alot of white smoke again. any W.A.G.
never had to add any before, added quite a bit but would guess 3 gallons or so. does smell diff. like coolant. drove to work this morning and its still full. like i said, this morning it started warmin up again then halfway to work it just went down where it was suppose to be and stayed. didnt smoke at all at the last two mile secs. but did when i pulled into my parking spot???????
Sounds like a stuck thermostat. Maybe if it got to hot it may have blown a head gasket or something if your burning coolant, hard to say but I would start with the thermostat.
I have drove it about 65-70 miles since i put water in it, and it hasnt used any since? if it blew a head gasket wouldnt there be water/coolant in oil?
A blown head gasket can send water out the exhaust instead of the oil if it's blew out in the exh. area.
I would try the thermostadt means it's easy first. Then I'd just keep watching your water/oil and see what happens. Hope you have another means of transportation, I wouldn't drive it too far away from home till I was sure I had it fixed..
It didn't lose any water in the last 70 miles you drove? Was it "smoking" those 70 miles?
Ya but, three gallons, that's a lot! How can a stuck thermostat cause that? A stuck thermostat would cause the high temps but not that kind of loss of water. White smoke is a indication of burning water so 'head gasket'. Maybe in the last 70 miles something just clogged up that bad spot in the head gasket temporarily. WAGing!!
I've seen head gasket symptoms of coolant smelling white exhaust and coolant loss be intermittent, though never seen one of our trucks with such a problem.
If you try the bars leak, just remember to follow the instructions completely. I think you're supposed to let it set dry, completely dry, which is a pain. I recall once using a vacuum on one end and a hair dryer on the other of the circuit, with the thermostat removed.
I was guessing on the amout of water added, I put it in from a hose and it was runnin slowly. I have ran about 200 miles since and it is still smoking white bad sometimes and sometimes not at all?? it looks like I have lost a 1/2 gallon of water and i did spot a leak on the water pump gasket on drivers side, slow drip that i will fix. temp guage is going up and down but stays mostly steady between n-o on normal and havent seen it rise higher then the r-m since i notinced this prob. could a t-stat cause white smoke?? irregardless I will change t-stat since it is cheap
