really need tran overhaul ?
98 ranger 5 speed automatic , have had overdrive off light flashing occasionally lately. Transmission shop pulled code saying 3rd to 4th clutch slippage. The shop said need overhaul? Did run wrong fluid 20,ooo miles, any comments appreciated.

Depending on what fluid you used, it could cause a slipping problem. If this goes on long enough, you can burn up a set of clutches. I dont know if you have correct fluid in it now and run it for a while, but that may solve the problem. But depending on how bad it was slipping, if at all, for those 20,000 mi. you may have worn some clutches. If the correct fluid doesnt fix it, then you may need a rebuild. But I would run it until I physically could feel some slipping, then you know for sure. But dont run it too long because you can tear up other parts inside.

On the valve body bolts, 7-8 ft-lb. Common for them to be lose and blow out gaskets. A bracket that holds the solenoids cracks and the EPC solenoid backs out. If the fluid color doesn't give you nightmares and the pan doesn't have enough sediment to grow con in then it is just a valve body problem. Get a manual and some gaskets. An air gun will work a miracle.
