My check engine light came on today so I hooked up the scanner and it tells me that Bank 1 is too lean.Which side of engine is bank 1?And what parts are needed to correct this problem? The first thing that came to mind was the o2 sensor(s).Has anyone else had this code.Thanks.
You didn't mention how many miles on your truck but 90% of the time the o2 sensors will last 100,000 miles or more.
Bank 1 is the passenger side. Before you change out the O2 sensors check for unmetered air leaking into your engine. Air that gets in that is not measured by the MAF is not "known" to the PCM which will not add enough fuel for the extra air. This causes the "lean" condition.
Most likely cause of this "extra air" is a vacuum leak. Look/listen for loose, disconnected or cracked vacuum lines. Also look for any other hoses/connections that may have come off. Has anyone done work under your hood lately?

Besides what wmcnally said, the MAF also may get dirty - got a K&N?
Its a 4.6 with 73k miles on it.I havent done any work on it lately and I do have a k&n filter. The first thing Im going to do is clean the MAF sensor and check for vaccuum leaks.BTW I did clear the light yesterday,my wife drove it to work 22 miles round trip and so far it hasnt come on again, but I expect it will.

The 4.6L in my '96 T-bird did the same thing with a K&N - I now clean the MAF regularly, although I should clean and reoil (lightly) the filter.
The K&N's from the factory were over-oiled and would foul the MAF - this is probably your problem.
My car threw the exact same code and it was a dirty MAF.
I just joined this site and think it's great. I have a 98 F150 with the Triton Eng. What a truck I love the power and the handling. To make a long story short I have 120,000 on my baby now. I keep everything under the hood clean and change oil and filter every 3,000 miles. Around 110,000 the alternator went. No ig deal easy to change actually I was surprised how easy. Well last night the Check Engine Lihght came on and it started idling rough. I looked up handheld devices and found the Equus to be the perfered tool. I picked one up and went to work. I got 0171 and 0174 codes. which mean lean on both sides. The OBD II has all the codes for all the sensors. Parts person told me it was the O2 sensors, but they didnt show up on the list. I was something silly. Behind the Intake manifold is a solenoid. Below it is the main vacuum source I assume. Well There is a 90 degree rubber connector there. (continued on next posting)
Weel There is a 90 degree rubber connector there. It was dry rotted. I checked the others and noticed they were getting to the point where they should also be changed. I replaced it and cleared the errors and Voila Ran like a top. I figured I'd be long winded here and let someone else know what I found. I am looking for suggestions on changing the spark plugs, passenger side back two look like a bear to get. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your help here and hope we can all do each other some good. Mike
Hey all,
I read something about air filters that had to be coated with a light coat of oil. It seems that the oil from air cleaner was messing with the mass airflow sensors, the oil was putting a light film on them causing problems. Just a thought
IMike I have a similar problem. I changed my alternator yesterday. Today i get the P0174 Code. What is this non sense? The alternator has nothing to do with the vaccum system. Thats kind of strange that we both had the same experience.
As far as the plugs go..Check Here On the right side in the first section he has a how to article with pictures.
0174 code i think is for just one bank..you might have a bad O2 sensor. All though I think the OBD II has a code for it.. I got 0171 and 0174 which is both banks. So I assumed it was somethig that had to do with the overall operation of the two of them together. You on the other hand just have the one. I would look for the problem on that side. I might have somehow dislodge a hose on the vacuum system for that side.. The only reason I say that is because the OBDII has alot of codes for mostly all the sensors but none for vacuum that I can see. Let me know how you make out..
