I have a 1960 F-100 with a 292, 3-spd transmission, and 3.73 gears of which has been in the family since new. My 292 has never been rebuilt since Ford assembled the engine in 1960. It wasn't until the last year of use (before restoration) when I elected to replaced the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, valley pan, and valve cover gaskets and replaced the timing chain and gears.
Hi transam, just curious, what intake and exhaust did you put in?
To give you an idea of the y-blocks reliability, my 292 has never been rebuilt since Ford assembled the engine in 1960. It wasn't until the last year of use (before restoration) when I elected to replaced the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, valley pan, and valve cover gaskets and replaced the timing chain and gears. I checked/adjusted the timing and dwell every month and adjusted the valves once a year. Up until the restoration commenced, the engine still ran smooth, didn't smoke, or burn any oil--even with 145,000 miles of use.
Great story transam
- I once had a 92 jeep wrangler never leaked a drop! my parents hooked me up with a free 04 PT cruiser. so i thought i would pass the good luck and gave the jeep to my brother in oregon. the 04 pt leaks like it has a artery cut.
Im sold on the 292. They look clean in all the truck pics ive seen.
I just need to do some research learn more about what trannys are compatible with it than i will look around to get one.
Great resource here!
edit i found this about a 1 1/2 hours from my house. what do you think i dont mind rebuilding the engine im not sure about the trannys is it what u guys were talking about? http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...024916368.html
That sounds like a good deal price wise and all. But what year is it? And what kind of an overhaul was done? Never know till ya got it. I would spend the extra and get the OD 3 speed tranny. I have an auto and wish it had overdrive.
Yeah. I am thinking that is a little high for an unknown engine. I only paid $200 for mine and when we found out it had a burned valve the guy only charged me $100 for it.
The complete rebuild by a local machine shop was about $1800 (including balancing, hard seats, etc etc)
Hi transam, just curious, what intake and exhaust did you put in?
The intake is the original 2bbl with the original Holley 2300 2bbl carb. The exhaust was all stock. The crossover tube, manifolds, and inlet tube were the originals to the truck. The muffler was replaced decades ago with a stock-type replacement, and the muffler outlet pipe was missing when I inherited the truck. The only items I replaced were the gaskets and the heat riser/exhaust valve.
For the restoration, I was very fortunate to find an NOS muffler inlet pipe, NOS muffler (with Ford script), NOS muffler outlet pipe, and NOS muffler hanger--all of which will compliment the full frame-off concourse restoration.
