My 65 F 100 Custom cab has a four speed manual, With Transmission code N on VIN. Can anyone tell me what transmission this is and have a exploded view of it?
What can I do to add overdrive? I travel a lot on the hwy and could use it!
Have the 3sp w/ O.D. in the 65 390 and getting around 11-12 mpg. Wonder if an auto tranny would improve mpg, perhaps more knowledgeable member can provide input. Picked up a C6 few yrs ago but have not gotten around to installing, seems like the swap would be labor intensive. Not sure if going to Electronic Ign., which is a relatively easy swap, improved mpg, but if nothing else don't have to freeze my backside off trying to get it started on a cold winter morning. Sorry, not much help!
You're only getting 11-12 MPG? This has to be city MPG. There's really no way to improve city MPG on these brick outhouse shaped trucks, unless you coast along with the engine off!
My '65 came with the T-85N overdrive, the average city MPG was 8-12. On the highway, it was a different story. Highway MPG usually averaged 18-24.
'Course I drive like Elmer Fudd, so your MPG may vary.
At one time after I bored the 352 out to 390 standard, adding a 4V, dual exhausts and the Cobra Le Mans oval air cleaner, I got 28.7 MPG on a Route 66 Rod Run from Seligman AZ to Needles CA. Average speed 45 MPH.
Thanks for everything Guys, gonna look around for a T85, Is it a direct swap? I saw one on ebay up to over 300. Bit would rather buy local for obvious reasons. Never done a transmission swap, so the less required the better.
You flatlanders who come up with these 'fish tales' 390 getting 15-18 mpg, Oh Yea? Oh; by the way, what's a highway. From Santa Cruz, Ca. to Lebec, Ca. exactly 300 mi's and drive it fairly regularly; the 65 w/ 302 and T18 makes the trip on a tank of gas, 18 gals. On the otherhand, the 65 w/390 and 3speed O.D., takes 1 1/2 tanks or 28gals. Don't mean to date you characters but have not heard it referred a 'maryjane' since whale bone corsets were in style. However, must admit do enjoy a good Montecristo, or Partagas on occasion.

Dave the OD must not be engaging, as per your numbers 300 divided by 28 = 10.7 mpg which is pretty normal for the average FE. They will go 12-13 highly tuned and 3.00 or 2.75 rears. There are too many posted here over the years in that range. When a guy comes in here touting 17-18 on direct drive he gets called out, but not if he has OD.

Don't know what else to tell you.
John
John, you gota be correct, although a few of us 390 owners effectionally refer to it as 'the gas hog' 10 mpg seems awfully low for that tranny. Got the shop manual out and intend reviewing the solonoid testing procedure, if too labor intensive it will present opportunity to install the C6 and auto steering column salvaged few yrs. ago. Thanks for the input.
