1999 Explorer trouble starting

My 99 Explorer has a hard time starting sometimes. It seems to happen most when the motor is cold. It cranks well, so it doesn't seem to be the battery or starter. It will crank for about 10 seconds, then I let off, then try it again and it will fire right up. Anyone have any suggestions?

Try this. Cycle the key on/off several times before trying to crank. Listen for fuel pump running approx 2 seconds eack key cycle. If it starts quicker using this method, I suspect you are losing fuel pressure. If so, you can check residual fuel pressure with a gague and see if it holds while engine is off. Fuel pressure regulator may be bad.

I believe there was a TSB or something on this. I had the same problem with my XLS 99 explorer. I had it still under warranty though, they replaced some fuel regulator or something like that. Mine would be picky though no matter what the temp was. If I would drive it and then start it in about 5 minutes after driving it, it would start right up, but if I would let it sit for a while, I had trouble starting it the first time. Something about fuel draining back somewhere and not a lot of pressure.

I know that might sound confusing but it is all fixed up now.
