Ford installed several different gear ratios (3.27 to 4.11 seems to be the range).
If you know it still has the factory gear ratio, you can look at the sticker on the door jamb for the axle code and look that up. Or you can look at the tag bolted to the differential cover (start of the 2nd line of the tag contains the gear ratio).
If you can't be sure that it has the factory gear ratio, then you're going to have to count something. If you don't want to pull the cover and count teeth, try rotating the wheels through one revolution while counting the rotations of the driveshaft.
Or, on the rear axle, and somewhere on the front axle, there is numbers stampped on it. Do you order a catalog from LMC Truck? Well, in there catalog, or on the website, they break down the number for you...really helpfull, they also decode vin numbers and stuff.
well looks like i have to order a ring/pinion set, jeggs has them for the ford 8.8, complete with shims, bearings etc for 276.99, anyone know of a better price? the exploder IS 8.8 rear end, right?
that is the same one i was looking at...and prolly a good idea to get all new bearings and stuff too...And i have been wondering, does anyone know where to get a rear diff guard for the stock rear end? The only things i can find are chrome diff covers and some aluminum cover. I am keeping my stock cover, but i want to ad one of those guards that are made of tube stuff....any available??
