quick question re compression test
Me once again!! Finally got my compression tester and adapter. Before I tear into anything, was wondering if I need to remove the oil drains and fuel drain before removing my glow plugs...Last thing I need is to hydrolock this blasted Excursion! I know to do it for injector removal (already done that twice now!), just curious about when removing only the gp's

The only oil that will enter when pulling a GP is the oil right around the glow plug. You can sop it up with a rag. Any oil in the cylinders will blow out GP holes as you crank the engine while doing the compression test just like it did when you replaced injectors.

Thanks, I have a handy magnet makes quick use of getting them out... I feel better now that all cylinders are 420 to 400...at least now I have gotten rid of one reason for smoking so bad....injectors otw! What size tubing is that your using?

Yea I feel better about the whole thing... Bought this truck with 108k..at 120 got a cracked injector cup and its been down hill since... Upon noticing this thing has a rebuilt HPOP installed, now after new head gaskets and cups now this!!! I just had to do the test myself to take away any doubt about possibly losing a cylinder. Still havent solved my smoking issue...

I tried to do the cups myself and screwed it up...took to a mom and pop shop and they pulled the heads and had them tested and cups were put in at ford shop...anything else i may be missing for this smoking issue at startup? I replaced the IPR; new gp module; gps are new last april and they ohmed out good all at .5. Pulled injectors and 2 had the ends charred looking...no codes but they looked like crap...anyway figured I would get at least that side of the engine swapped with injectors from Clay....guess I havent changed the oil and thats next as well as new fuel filter...anything else I could look at while engine apart?

How long are you waiting to start after you turn the key to on? If you are only waiting until the WTS light goes out wait at least another 20 seconds. The GPR can stay operated for up to 2 minutes depending upon temps. If waiting longer helps it may help even more to wait longer.
