351 crisis

My friend has a 351 that he is putting in a 79 280zx. He needs to know what kind of 351 it is. How can one tell the difference between a m,c,and w? Any standout ways?

look at the casting code on the back of the block near the oil gallery pressure sensor is the absolute way to know date and location of the engines whereabouts. Sometimes on the manifolds there are logos also. what you are looking for is a type of MC or CF logo or maybe even DF. MC and DF are michigan casting and dearborn foundry meaning its a 351M. CF is a cleveland. Before you go snooping around for codes, check the valve covers. Are they 6 bolts or 8? 6 is a windsor. Also the water neck on the windsor goes to the intake manifold, not the block.

First off, if it has an oil sender behind the intake, it isn't a Windsor. If the block in front is about level with the base of the intake manifold, it's a Cleveland. If the block is about an inch taller where the intake bolts down, it is either a 351M or 400. If the thermostat housing bolts to the intake, it's a Windsor, if it bolts to the block, it's a 351C/M/400. The CF and MCC are casting marks that identify where the block was cast, but don't identify which engine. The 351M/400 were cast at both foundries, but the 351C was only cast at the Cleveland one, I believe.

OK Why would your buddie be putting in 351 in place of the straight six?? This fuel injected six puts out plenty of power for that 2400 # car . and if you do the horsepower to weight ratio I think the six puts out more ponies then the 351, in this case ..

I had a 76 280Z a long time ago .. I know when I first got it it suprized me as to how much power it made being just a fuel injected straight six..
I now have a Porsche 944 with a little fuel injected 4 cyl. in it . this car won't spin the tire off the line no matter how hard you tried. but she will break them loose once it hits 3200 Rpm's or about 30 mph's and she'll do it in 2nd gear too..

try www.hybridz.org for tips on Z-car swaps. Like has been said, 6 bolt valve covers, upper radiator hose connecting to the intake manifold and horizontal fuel pump bolts equals a Windsor.

the greatest amount of power depends solely on year of production and intent of the engine. Chances are if it was from a truck or passenger car, the hp levels arent too high but the torque is decent at a low rpm. If the engine was in the emissions choked days of the mid to late 70s, the numbers wont be very high. is it a 2 barrel carb setup? 4?

I'm Sorry I wasn't saying he couldn't do it ... I was just saying the horsepower to weight ratio the six was putting out more then the 351.

If your friend is looking at a SBF/Z swap, the problem isn't going to be power. The 351W will make more power than the brakes and chassis can handle without serious upgrades. The 351M/400 isn't a good choice for this combo as both the engine width and height causes clearance issues. The 351W has the small-block bellhousing bolt pattern which gives better options too.

he he

great. as said before, if the intake has a water neck, its a windsor. your buddy will want to go with aluminium heads and intake to reduce weight over the front axel. from there a nice rebuild of the motor wouldnt hurt.

as you are his friend, id consider taking out a life insurance policy, or tell his wife if he has one.
