What to look for

I recently purchased a 08 F250 for my first diesel. The problem is it has 100k on it already. What should I be concerned about and keep an eye out for? It seems to run great as far as I can tell. However,I am concerned about the regen. It seems to go into regen about every half hour driving on the freeway. Also, it has a slight turbo lag. Is this normal or should I be concerned? I have read some of the posts and you all seam very knowledgeable. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

All turbos have lag, that's normal. Mine has 18k miles, and seems to go into regen every 175 miles.

I figured the lag was pretty normal. I was more worried about the regen. Its depressing to see the mpg go from 19 down to 14 while cruising down the freeway. Thanks for the info, I'm a little less worried now.

Regens...how far apart miles wise? Sounds way to close which could indicate that maybe you have a bad senor fore and aft of the dpf, maybe both.

Could also be an overfueling problem as well.

How does your tail pipes look?

At 100K did you get a coolant flush and cleaning? That needs to be completed. For this I would only take to a Ford dealer. Cost me about 140 to get mine done.

If 4x4 then I would raise your front tires in the air and check ball joints and then also do the needle bearing maint in your 4x4.

Get rid of the dpf and add a tuner and your regen problems vanish...plus all the money you will save!

It regens about every forty miles. The tail pipes have a bit of soot in them. I have never seen the truck smoke. If its the sensers a DPF delete will solve the problem, correct? This might be a dumb question, but where are the needle bearings, do they need to be replaced or just cleaned and regreased?

The truck should not regen every 40 miles. If a sensor was bad it should turn a the check engine light on. Other things to do is check the overflow bottle and monitor coolant levels.Check oil levels, also good idea to change fuel filters.

what kind of fuel mileage are you getting? this might help pinpoint the regen cycle cause.

and change the oil as someone has suggested. I'd short stick check the oil level...

The computer says it gets 19 mpg on the highway while not in regen. It drops down to 14 during regen. Unfortunetly I am out of town for the next three weeks (military training) so I cannot verify what the computer is telling me. As soon as I get back I plan on changing the coolant, fuel filters, and oil and filter. I was going to run Rotella synthetic 5-40.

you need to get the regen issue fixed before going with a delete or otherwise. What if the cause is an overfueling condition....no DPF delete will fix that.

So what do I look for that would indicate a fueling problem and what can I do? Thank you all for your help and patience.

first steps are to take it in and have the computer read. or somewhere or someone that knows or has the equipment to do so.

Diagnostics need to be performed. Issue # 1 is regens are two frequent. #2 is a by-product of # 1. Sooty tail pipes.
