I was wanting to see if someone could give me a picture with the dimensions of a rating plate for a 55. I have a friend who does photo etching and stuff like that and he wants to test his new toy that does something like painting designs on metal (kind of like they do with t-shirts) and if it works out we may have a way to make blank rating plates for cheap...
Making the plates isn't difficult at all. It's finding an embossing machine that's the right size and font, - has asterisks on it - that will hold a plate this narrow and emboss that close to the edge.
But since you asked, the plates are exactly 5 1/2" x 2 1/4"
Here's a pic of my new ones - note they are not stock numbers:
Is your friend familiar with the copyright and licensing laws involved with producing these tags or if there are any?

Thanks Julie, ? for you though is your plate the same size as a 55's or are they bigger/smaller? When my buddy and I were talking about it we thought about the trademarks/copyright stuff but honestly we dont know how they will turn out and if we did something like that it would only be available to us here in the forums one of those "a buddy helping out a buddy" type of things if ya know what I mean...lol

Yep that plate was used from late 51 through at least 56. Same size!
"buddies helping buddies" is a good invitation to have a meeting/greeting from the Ford Motor Comapny legal team. Those folks have taken a dim view of trademark infringement in recent years, confiscating websites and forcing businesses to change their names, even though they've had the name, in some cases, for 50 years. Since the name Ford and the script font are both registered trademarks of FoMoCo, if your friend intends to make plates like that available to others, he needs to look into the licensing procedure or risk a lawsuit.

Especially how the Mustang crowd has been taking a hit on this.

I know for a fact that AG Back east advertises that they make them, but when I called, I spoke to the original owner of the business who told told me he is now retired and has turned the business over to his son, and his son stopped making the 51-52 Rating plates. The other links all take me to the same AG Back East.
There is a seller on ebay, jwit458, that custom produces the plates in the USA. Do a search on ebay and you'll find them. I'm very satisfied with the plate they supplied for a '46 Tudor project.
