roasted 390

Well it got HOT HOT HOT, that will teach me to check guages!! so I pulled the head, after a presure chech found air in the rad. #3 cly had a bad spot in between the water passage and cylinder in the gasket. Can I get by only replaing the head gasket.or should I have the head checked for cracks///flat. p.s. the heads have been cut .070??? another quick 1.

2 lifters came out when i was vac up the slop. do i dare just pluging them in or replaceing with new and a breakin again??

Thanks fe masters

I had the same issue once. It was because I used some sort of "cheapie" Fel-Pro gasket. Went to the performance version, P/N 1020, and no more trouble.

I'd just re-use the lifters if you can get them back in the bores they came out of. Mixing them up isn't great, but perhaps an acceptable risk.

The problem you may have, is that you only see air in the rad. Where did the excess coolant go? Hopefully it blew out the rad cap. It is likely though, that even if that happened, once the engine cooled down, the same leak drew coolant into the cylinder. If from there it got into the oil, you may already be having bearng problems.

Did you see any coolant in the cylinder when you removed the head?

Did you check the oil for coolant?

If the answer to both questions is "No", put back the lifters (in there respective bores if possible), install a 1020 head gasket, and you'll likely be OK. You might want to consider replacing the other head gasket as well while you're at it.

If the head gaskets already were 1020s, and you're sure the heads were torqued down properly, you may want to check the head and block mating surfaces to make sure they are flat. Cyl heads can warp, and it doesn't take much to screw up a seal.

yes the bad cyl was shiney clean and had green in it.
there was some in the valley ,but i think it got there when i removed the intalake. no green in oil pan, but the valve covers had the white scum it them. so you think i will be ok installing lifters and guessing on the correct hole?? I retorqued the heads before removal and they were good. so here i go a set of 1020 gaskets and a little luck..

thanks Argess

It's a chance you take. I would take it. If everything works, you're in great shape. If it doesn't, you'd be facing a rebuild anyway.
