F350 Brake Help

1996 F350

recently i noticed a smell coming from the front of the truck after a drive. open closer inspection, the front discs are getting hot - like put your hand on the disc and you can only keep it there for a few seconds cus of the heat.

when i jack the truck up after a drive, the tires spin ok. there is some resistence, but nothing i would consider excessive. and when driving it, it doesn't feel like the brakes are dragging. and this is casual driving - no towing or riding the brakes....

i greased the slide pins and everything looks good. i replaced the calipers just over a year ago when i bought the truck. the pedal feels great and the brakes work just fine.

but the smell and the heat has me concerned. there is obviusly some drag, i'm trying to figure out if there is too much? is it possible there is a problem with the master cylinder having a delayed pressure relief after i take my foot off the brake? what should i check next?

thanks for the help.

Everything you describe would seem normal to me.
Hopefully other opinions will follow.

it all seems to function normal, but the disc being so hot to the touch after a casual drive? touching the disc for 3-5 seconds is about all i can do.

next time someone takes a drive, could you put a hand on your front disc and let me know what you feel?

Yea it'd be to hot to touch right after stopping the truck after being driven some even at fairly low speeds, gonna be hot enough to burn your hand. The rotor that is, not the hub or wheel, they should only be warm to the touch.

Sounds like you tested, jacked it up and felt the drag while it was all hot, need to jack it up and check it for excessive drag when cool.

The heat in the rotors and pads is going to make it easier to turn, might be dragging more then you might notice "hot".

Jack it up cold, start it and apply the brakes a couple times firm like you just stopped, then see how much drag if any you feel when spinning the front wheels by hand.

If the rotors have surface rust on them drive back and forth a couple times holding the pedal down lightly first to scrub any of that off, but not as to build any real heat. Won't take much to remove any little bit of surface rust they might have, caused by being parked during a damp night for example.

Please be careful. Do not touch the rotor or caliper after driving the vehicle. My brakes get so hot after even a slower stop that your instantly burned if you touch them. Trust me i'v tried. I wanted to try after hard stopping a heavy trailer, but i didnt because of the heat coming off of them. Its common for brakes to run over 600 degrees under hard brakeing.

The brakes will naturally drag ever so slightly possibly causing the heat, or it could be the residual heat of an earlier stop that you are feeling. But its nothing to be worried about.
