2002 4.2L Stalls when I accelarate - Please Help!!!!
Hello All -
Im new to this site and need some advice.
I have a 2002 F150 V6 4.2L. Mileage is 83K. Recenlty my truck has been giving me some trouble. When I am driving (pushing on the gas) my truck sometimes stall and/or hessitates. My rpms seem to dropp. I get nervous especially when Im going to make a left hand turn because it acts like its going to die. I have no check engine light. Any thoughts??
Start simple and eliminate easy stuff....well have you tried....
to change the fuel filter??
to change the air filter??
look for vacuum leaks....especially around the EGR area.
So I changed my fuel filter and air filter. Still giving me the same problem. When Im driving down the road, it stalls and hessitates. My rpms drop. It only happens for a few seconds then it goes back to accelerating.
I also sprayed using carb cleaner to see if my rpms increased. It all seemed fine. did not rev the engine...no vacum leaks found.
I've read it my be my spark plugs, wires or Coil on Plug (COP). What are COPs?? How do I change my COPs??????

COPs stands for Coil On Plug...in other words each spark plug has a coil on top of it...in your case with a V6 ...6 coils. Your truck may or may not have these depending on the year of your truck. What year of truck is yours??
Yes other good maintenance is to clean the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. But your not expressing that you're having trouble with idling...just under load. but couldn't hurt
also to clean the MAF ( Mass Air Flow) sensor is a good idea too, as mentioned .
was this a sudden on set or gradual event or has this been happening for some time?
I cleaned my MAF sensor yesterday with a spray from AutoZone. That did not help. Where is my IAC valve? How do I clean it?
My truck is a 2002 4.2L V6 F150 with 83,000 miles. Does it have Coil on Plugs (COPs)?
My problem happened all of a sudden. From one day to another. Its been acting like this for the last week. When Im driving (pushing on the gas) sometimes for a few seconds it stall and hessitates. It just stops accelerating! Then it picks up and goes.

a co worker was experiencing something similar and a cam position sensor was the issue. but I would change the plugs before I'd get that crazy....it still can be several things
I went to start the truck today and while it was in idle mode it started to stumble, stall, hessitate (not sure how to describe it otherwise).
I took off the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve and cleaned it using the maf cleaner i bought earlier. I just cleaned the valve itself. I did not clean where it connects on the engine. I hope thats ok. I also hope this solves the problem. I will let you guys know.
I have an 01 4.2 and my truck was doing the same thing. I changed plugs and wires and that took care of the problem. If your truck is the same as mine it is not COPS. It has one coil pack for all six plugs. Which you can determine if you look to the left and toward the back of the intake. It will be between the valve cover area and the intake area right on top. Depending on how long it has been since a tune up it might be time anyway.
I cleaned my IAC and it seemed to have worked but then guess what...the truck started doing the same thing!!!
Thanks for the advise Delijer55.
Come to find out that my truck is not COPs. Its has six wires going to a coil pack. About two years ago I took it to a mechanic shop and they changed my plugs (also charged me an arm and a leg!!). Is changing my plugs and wires a job I can do myself?? How hard or easy is it?? Any tips?
The plugs aren't too bad. I changed mine. I took some out from the top some from underneath and used some extensions and a swivel. It isn't too bad but it isn't exactly fun either. It all depends on your capabilities and how much money you want to save.
I will attempt to change the plugs. I will also change the wires as well.
Any particular plugs and/or wires I need to use??
Do you guys think cleaning the throttle body would help my problem?
It sounds like your coil pack is on its way out.
I would replace that & let us know what you notice.
...as for plugs,definitely Motorcraft plugs.
I just replace my coil pack with a SMP(premium unit) one and it is fine. I believe I used their premium 8mm wire set as well.
Cleaning the TB will not solve your problem.
