I recently purchased a 2005 F350 dual rear wheel crew cab with a V10. Can anyone help me figure out the rear gear ratio? I have done several searches with no luck. The axle code on the drivers door says 4L is this all I need or should I post the VIN # as well. Thanks for any help, everyone here has been a wealth of knowledge.
No VIN on any year Ford vehicle contains the AXLE code, it's listed separately on the Certification Label.
I don't see an AXLE code listed of 4L. Look below where it says AXLE for the code, not above. If you looked above, 4L is prolly the paint code.
AXLE codes listed on Certification Labels (Warranty Plates prior to 1981) are two digits. With Limited Slip: A letter followed by a number, or without Limited Slip: Two numbers.
There should be a Ford ID tag on the rear axle that will have the ratio and the type of axle it has.
Example: 3L55 = 3.55-1 with Limited Slip, or 3.55 = 3.55-1 without Limited Slip.
Best bet is to try and read the the gear ratio on the axle tag. The tag should be held by one or two of the diff cover bolts. You either 4.10 or 4.30 gears. (Unless someone changed them)
Well I have a 4.30 ratio according to the rear axle tag. It looks as though the rear end has never been taken apart so tag is probably correct. Thanks for the help
