I don't have an answer for ya but what tranny and gears come in the 89 F250? Something that might help someone that might know would be.
A gallon of water weighs 8.35lbs*500=4175lbs plus how ever much the 500 gallon tank weighs along w/ some type of pump.
well I dont think your truck can legally do it.
you're talkin 5000 pounds in the back of your truck.
yes you'd need stronger/more spring unless you're content with it riding on the bump stops.
Not to be a smart ***, but you need to consider making 2 trips.. Even half that much weight will be murder to haul without a tank with baffles in it.. It will get to sloshing around and make your trick VERY unstable, it won't handle any where near what a "solid" load would...
I would also say go with a smaller tank. Like a 250-300gal truck tank. I used to haul water all the time with my 79 F-150 with a pickup tank and it worked well.
The water tower is only four miles from my house so it's a short trip. In the past I used a 210 gallon tank in a Dodge Dakota and that did okay. I thought I would be able to step up to a bigger tank with the purchase of the F250.
Damn thats fair for a Dakota... whats the worst thing that could happen other than some major spring sag? if that ? i say try it, but thats coming from a guy who has no experience loading down my own F250(460) at all. Good luck
what about putting the tank on a trailer? it'll be alot safer
I think this is an excellent idea. My father-in-law hauls water due to well problems too, in a 500 gallon tank on a dual axle trailer. He pulls it with an '05 F150 without any issues (I think my '87 F150 could do the same job if I had a trailer brake controller). I would think the older F250 should have no problem pulling 500 gallons of water on a trailer.
the farm has a 650 gal tank on a trailer to follow a john deere highboy around for spraying crops. the old man pulls it with a 90 model halfton 4x4 with no problem. the trailer does have brakes on one axle though.
whats the worst thing that could happen other than some major spring sag? if that ?
Good luck

An interesting wreck. With that much weight in the bed of an F250 the front wheels will be unloaded to the point that steering could be dangerous. Especially in a panic situation.
If you want to haul 500 gallons at a time, use a trailer. If you want to haul it on the back of your truck, get a smaller tank.
